Bridgeway’s 50th Anniversary Golf Classic

Elizabeth, N.J.Bridgeway will host the 50th Anniversary Golf Classic on Monday June 4th, 2018, at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, NJ.

This year’s event will be the 15th annual golf event that Bridgeway has hosted to raise much needed funds for the organization. The day will begin with a barbeque lunch on the patio. The tournament play will begin at 12:30pm with a shotgun start. The 18-hole course will offer lots of games including a putting contest, and a Hole-in-One car provided by Flemington Cars & Trucks. A cocktail social hour awaits golfers as they finish their rounds, where the silent auction will be on display. Then, a gourmet dinner is served in the clubhouse, and raffle prizes and tournament prizes are awarded by Peter Pogany, Chair of the Bridgeway Golf Committee, and owner of major event sponsor Rapps Pharmacy.

The 50th Anniversary celebrations like the Golf Classic are a fitting tribute to the extraordinary impact Bridgeway has had on New Jersey communities. “Without Bridgeway services, so many people would have returned home alone after a hospital stay. Some may have been homeless, if not for the intensive support and community linkages provided by Bridgeway staff. We must ensure that no one goes without access to Bridgeway services well into the future,” said Mark T. Williams, Chairman of Bridgeway’s Board of Trustees.

Bridgeway was founded in 1968 as a vocational program for people managing the symptoms of mental illness. For five decades, Bridgeway has been, in the words of one person served, ‘a bridge to a new life’, for thousands of people.

Today, Bridgeway continues to honor the value of purpose-filled days. Whether it is focusing on finding and maintaining stable housing, or setting employment and education goals, self-determination continues to be a foundational principal of recovery. Through early intervention, integrated care, case management, teams of caring professionals who visit individuals in their homes, and counselors who are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Bridgeway is demonstrating every day that recovery is possible!

“When people who have serious mental illnesses learn to discard the myths of mental illness and overcome the stigma our society attaches to it, recovery happens and is remarkable in light of the many barriers they must overcome.  Bridgeway specializes in serving people who may be running out of hope, many of whom are also dealing with poverty, substance abuse and homelessness.  But with Bridgeway’s evidence based services and supports at the right time, and right place, recovery is possible.  Recovery means becoming a valued family member, worker, student, neighbor and friend. We celebrate recovery every day at Bridgeway,” said Cory Storch, CEO.

Bridgeway programs focus on the needs and goals of each individual served. Multi-disciplinary teams of mental health and wellness professionals are available 24/7. Bridgeway staff are on the road 7 days a week, delivering in-home case management and counseling in 11 counties in NJ including Union, Hudson, Passaic, Middlesex, Mercer, Somerset, Warren, Hunterdon, Essex, Sussex, and Bergen County.

In the cities of Elizabeth in Union County, and Newton in Sussex County, Bridgeway operates facilities that function as day rehabilitation centers, delivering comprehensive individual, as well as group coaching in life skills, medication management, vocational skills and career services.

Access to primary medical care, daily meals, and comradery, are essential elements of the day programs, and the supports that can make a critical difference in preventing re-hospitalizations.

In Hudson County, Bridgeway operates a Crisis Intervention Center which assists people experiencing an episode of mental illness, often for the first time. At the Crisis Intervention Center, Bridgeway introduced the living room model for receiving and treating people in crisis; an innovation in mental health services in NJ.  In Somerset County, Bridgeway was recently given the opportunity to relocate psychiatric emergency screening services from the hospital emergency room, to a newly designed Bridgeway living room in Somerville; representing another innovation in mental health care in NJ.

People served by Bridgeway have offered the most profound motivation for celebration and commitment to the future of Bridgeway “Bridgeway teaches you to live well in spite of barriers,” says Michael Schultz, peer counselor. Lamont Davis shared “Psych wards, prisons, hospitals, I couldn’t keep going that route. Bridgeway helped me build a better life.” Please visit Bridgeway’s website and click on the Youtube icon to see full testimonials including Michael and Lamont, as well as Bridgeway’s music video A Bridge to a New Life, and Bridgeway’s video collection.

Over the past week social media and the news have been filled with stories and articles encouraging people to seek help if they’re in emotional distress. Todos esperan el verano; los días son más calientes y largos, y la madre tierra se pone su mejor vestido mientras las frutas se maduran en el sol y las flores ondean un alegre "hola". Aquí en la ciudad de ...

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani, a New York Times best selling author, was recommended to me by a young woman who actually came from the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, the place where the novel is set. “The author did such a wonderful job of describing how the town actually is,” said the young lady.

What is the “final frontier” on the Earth's surface? Many people would say Alaska, the 49th state, which was added to the United States fifty years ago. Into the Water by Paula Hawkins (Riverhead Books, 2017)

I wanted to like Into the Water by Paula Hawkins because I had enjoyed her previous novel, The Girl on the Train, which was a suspenseful thriller.
