PLAINFIELD, NJ - The city of Plainfield partnered with the GrassROOTS Community Foundation for Green Ribbon Week to promote positive mental health among local youth.
Green Ribbon Week is the mental health and social action initiative of the GrassROOTS SuperGirls.
The aim is to encourage healthy behaviors that can prevent and reduce risk factors for depression and suicide. According to a 2016 study by Psych Central, one in five teens experience depression before they reach adulthood. And a 2018 study by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America found that over 3,000 suicide attempts are made each day by students in grades 9 through 12.
Plainfield city employees who dressed in green took a moment to recognize the initiative.
Veronica Taylor, the Director of the Department of Recreation, said, "we really need to reach out to support our young people. Most importantly, we need to listen to them, and help them find their inner voice and become the strong individuals they are meant to be."
