Plainfield, NJ – Crescent Choral Society will be performing a selection of English choral music on Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 pm.
I Was Glad will be the Crescent Choral Society's first performance of Crescent Concerts' 35th season, and its first concert under the direction of Crescent Concerts' new Artistic Director, Clifford Parrish.
England has a strong choral tradition, dating back to the Renaissance and beyond. In I Was Glad, you will hear music from Renaissance composer William Byrd, Baroque composer Henry Purcell, 20th century composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and even contemporary composers like John Tavener. The Choral Society will be performing two majestic pieces composed for the coronations of British monarchs -- Handel's "The King Shall Rejoice," composed for the coronation of King George II, and Hubert Parry's "I Was Glad," performed at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II -- and pieces celebrating works of British literature -- Tavener's setting of the (possibly mad) 18th century poet William Blake's "The Lamb" and Britten's setting of the (definitely mad) 18th century minister Christopher Smart's "Jubilate Agno" (Rejoice in the Lamb).
In other words, you don't have to be an Anglophile or a choral music enthusiast, and you don't have to be a partisan of contemporary or early music. This concert has something for everyone, and will be sure to delight.
The Crescent Choral Society will be accompanied by Brenda Day, on Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church’s beautiful Adams organ.
