Plainfield, NJ – (June 28, 2017) - Dr. Caryn Cooper, Principal at Frederic W. Cook School, was named Acting Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools by the Plainfield Board of Education, at its meeting Tuesday, held at Plainfield High School.

The Board of Education President, Mrs. Emily E. Morgan said, “The appointment of Dr. Cooper will be finalized immediately upon approval by the Commissioner of Education through the Union County Executive Superintendent of Schools. The Board believes that Dr. Cooper possesses the necessary qualifications and experience to fulfill the role as Acting Superintendent of Schools while the Board completes its process of naming an Interim Superintendent.

“We are in the process of selecting a permanent District leader, which will include surveying stakeholders, a screening process, extensive background checks, and community input. In the meantime, we thank Dr. Cooper for taking the helm of our schools at this moment.  She has experience serving our District, and has done so in the past, in 2010 she was named Acting Assistant Superintendent of Schools for (K-12) curriculum and instruction, providing overseeing programming to all our 15 schools.”

Dr. Cooper is a successful and experienced educator, currently serving as Principal at Plainfield’s Frederic W. Cook School, a K-5 grade school, where she has been serving for the past six years.  In her previous role, Dr. Cooper served as an elementary school principal at a Plainfield School District school that had been identified as in need of improvement for 5 consecutive years. She was credited with its success and her school was identified as a Best Practices School and was awarded $100,000 to continue innovative programming.

Dr. Cooper is passionately interested in the impact of principals on student learning, as well as Best Practices in teaching and learning.  She has vast experienced in education, having served in many capacities, as an educator for the Newark Public School District, Trenton and South Brunswick Schools.

“I’m looking forward to providing guidance and leadership for the district while the Board continues their search for a Superintendent,” said Dr. Cooper.

Dr. Cooper received a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Kean University. A Master’s Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, in Curriculum and Instruction, a Master’s in Educational Administration from Kean University and a doctorate degree from The University of Pennsylvania.  Her dissertation topic was Instructional Leadership: How Principals Conceptualize their Roles as School Leaders. 

Dr. Cooper is currently a trustee member, serving on the Board, for the Plainfield Public Library.  She is also a former member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey chapter of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)-serving as the Urban Liaison.

At last night’s meeting the Board said that it shall retain Dr. Cooper as its Acting Superintendent until such time as the Board appoints an Interim Superintendent of Schools. If the Board no longer requires Dr. Cooper’s services as Acting Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cooper will immediately revert to the position as Principal, upon the terms and conditions of the Plainfield Administrators and Supervisors Association bargaining agreement.
