Plainfield, NJ – EZ Ride, a NJ Healthy Corner Store award recipient, will use grant funds to encourage local food stores in Plainfield to carry healthier grocery items and more fresh produce.

This comes on the heels of its Healthy Community Network Grant last year that promoted walking and biking to school, and more.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15th, EZ Ride will be hosting a free string cheese sampling event at Rudilcia Market in Plainfield.  The event, to be held from 3:00-3:30 pm, will take place at 846 East 2nd Street, and will promote heart-healthy afterschool snacks for students.

EZ Ride is a recipient of a $5,000 NJ Healthy Corner Store award that will be used to encourage corner stores in Plainfield to increase the availability of fresh produce and healthier snacks and drinks.

Community partners from local government, education, and the broader community will assist EZ Ride in the actual implementation of the project.  The partners include Canela’s Grocery and Deli, Isabelita Market, Rudilcia Supermarket, Ravi West Indian Grocery, City of Plainfield, Plainfield Health Department, NJ SNAP-Ed of Rutgers University, and the Plainfield Public School District.

Last year, EZ-Ride was awarded a $20,000 Healthy Community Network Grant to promote walking and biking to the schools and to develop a Healthy Corner Store initiative in Plainfield. We selected four stores that were located near the elementary schools and the business center. Our goal is to teach students about healthy eating habits at a young age and to provide easy access to fresh produce and healthier after school snacks and drinks.

“This grant helps us to encourage convenience stores to offer more fresh produce and healthy snacks”, said Dr. Atif Nazir, Plainfield Health Officer. The City of Plainfield expects more residents to choose healthy food options which could result in a reduction in obesity rates.

“We really appreciate the support from the New Jersey Healthy Corner Store Initiative,” said Perry Frenzel, Chairman of EZ Ride. “We are excited to be part of a network of grantees. These funds will help us provide free healthy food tastings and mini cooking demonstrations at participating corner stores to encourage healthier eating.”

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...
