ROSELLE, NJ--A national $600,000 Building Communities of Recovery (BCOR) grant has been secured by Prevention Links to bolster its recovery support efforts. The grant comes through the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act.

In 2016, President Barak Obama signed into law the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act or CARA. This is the first major federal addiction legislation in 40 years and the most comprehensive effort undertaken to address the opioid epidemic, encompassing all resources necessary for a coordinated response – prevention, treatment, recovery, law enforcement, criminal justice reform, and overdose reversal according to officials.

The objective of the grant is to put in motion resources in and around the recovery community and increasing the quality and availability of long-term recovery support from substance abuse and addiction.

The grant will support and promote education about recovery and the development, enhancement, expansion, and delivery of recovery support services in the Union County and Metro New Jersey area.

“We are excited to be one of only eight recipients nationally to be selected by the federal government. Our organization chose to focus on adolescents and emerging adults, a population that is still underserved. It is our hope that by focusing on this population that we will introduce recovery support services for young people that addresses addiction at its root,” Pamela Capaci, Prevention Links Chief Executive Officer said.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment awarded the CARA Grant to Prevention Links. The grant will help expand community outreach and public education on issues stemming from addiction and recovery.

“The needs of the emerging adult population are distinct from those of adults. Recreation, education, and finding meaning and purpose in life are all essential elements of a stable recovery for this group,” Morgan Thompson, Prevention Links Director of Academic and Recovery Support, said.

Thompson herself has been in recovery since the age of 18. “The BCOR grant will provide us the opportunity to scale our youth recovery mentorship services and bring new, developmentally-appropriate recovery supports to the New Jersey landscape which, we hope will be replicated throughout the state.”

Prevention Links is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Roselle. Its mission is to provide substance abuse and alcohol prevention, education and recovery support services.
