PLAINFIELD, NJ - Plainfield residents woke up to the sounds of fire trucks and helicopters hovering above as smoke and fire was seen from the top floor of a 2-story frame structure located at 124 Central Avenue, between West 2nd and West Front streets.

Fire crews from neighboring communities, including Berkeley Heights, Union and Westfield, assisted the local Plainfield Fire Department, to get the 2-alarm fire under control. The structure was apparently abandoned for a few years and it is unknown whether there were any occupants at the time.

As of 8 a.m. the block remained closed to traffic as the investigation continues.
