PLAINFIELD, NJ— EZ Ride, The Plainfield Health Department, and Rutgers SNAP-Ed are partnering with Rudilcia Supermarket to host a free event for residents that features health screenings, nutrition education, and a fresh fruit smoothie tasting. The event will take place on Thursday, June 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm at Rudilcia Supermarket located at 846 East 2nd Street and is made possible due to a grant from the NJ Healthy Community Network and support from the NJ Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

Many communities do not have large grocery stores, and the local comer store is the primary destination for food shopping. The Healthy Comer Store Initiative was launched to support comer store owners committed to increasing the availability of healthy food options in their stores and encouraging customers to make healthier choices. Our primary goal is to help and teach students about healthy eating habits and to provide easy access to healthier after school snacks and drinks. We have therefore selected stores that are located near local schools to participate in the program.

In addition to Plainfield, EZ Ride is working with several comer stores in Long Branch and Asbury Park to assist owners to sell healthier foods at a profit. Rudi Torres, the owner of Rudilcia Supermarket, is concerned about the health of his customers, especially school children.

Our healthy food tasting will help children and residents try an alternative to the high sugar or salty snacks. We will introduce healthy and nutritious recipes. Fresh fruit smoothies were chosen for our tasting event as they are high in Calcium and Vitamin D, and a good source of Potassium and Magnesium which are essential for heart health.

Nurses from the Plainfield Health Department will conduct the health screenings. Many residents do not have health insurance. They can receive important screenings and information about choosing foods and drinks that are low in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar that could help lower blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol.

Show your support for your local store that stocks heart healthy snacks by visiting Rudilcia Supermarket on Thursday, June 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Enjoy a free Heart Healthy Snack and get your blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol checked.

North Avenue is at the heart of the downtown and is the first perception of Plainfield that many visitors see. The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb

The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb (Atria Books, 2017)

Sharyn McCrumb is, quite simply, an American gem, and one of my favorite authors. From her books set in Appalachia with strange characters who remind us of our pioneer past, to St. Dale, a masterpiece about the legendary car racer, Dale Earnhardt in McCrumb's NASCAR series, McCrumb's poetic language and attention to ...

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume (Vintage Books, 2015)

I loved In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. Set in Elizabeth, NJ in the early 1950s, the landmarks, famous people of the era, name brand products, and cultural background are so familiar to those of us who grew up in Central Jersey that it's impossible not to relate to the novel on a personal level. The small city of ...

Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown, 2017)

Being a book reviewer has its pitfalls, the biggest of which is the “the false start.” This is when I get half way through a book and realize that I will have nothing concrete to say to my readers about it, and finishing the book would be a waste of my time.
