PRESS RELEASE:  EZ Ride, the Plainfield Health Department, and Rutgers Snap-Ed will be hosting a free health screening and afterschool snack tasting event at Isabelita Market in Plainfield.  The event, which will be held on Thursday, April 27th from 2:30-3:30 pm at 341 Park Avenue, will feature fresh air-popped popcorn and health screenings to test blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose for customers and residents.  The event is made possible by grants from the NJ Healthy Community Network and the NJ Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

The Healthy Corner Store Initiative was launched to increase the variety of healthy foods sold in corner stores and to encourage customers to make healthier choices.  Many residents in urban cities like Plainfield lack access to transportation to get to larger grocery stores and partnering with local corner stores is an effective approach to improve access to fresh produce and healthy foods.

Our ultimate goal is to teach students about healthy eating habits at a young age and to provide better access to fresh produce and healthier after school snacks and drinks for residents.  This event will give children and residents the opportunity to try alternatives to sugary and salty snacks.

Air-popped popcorn is our featured snack as it only has 31 calories per cup.  A cup of popcorn has 1.2 grams of fiber, less than one gram of fat, and has high levels of antioxidants.  Air popping is one of the healthiest ways to prepare popcorn because it does not require oil, which adds to the fat and calorie content of snacks.  We will have a variety of healthy seasonings that can be sprinkled on the popcorn to enhance the taste.

Join us to show your support for Isabelita Market on Thursday, April 27th from 2:30-3:30 pm and take advantage of our free health screening and enjoy air-popped popcorn!
