SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Holy Savior Academy will be implementing two new science programs beginning September 2018. They are Makerspace and Science Dimensions by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Makerspace is a place where our students will have the opportunity to explore their own interest. They will learn to use many different tools and materials- both physical and virtual. The students will develop, design, and create a variety of projects. Some of the centers that will be found in the HSA Makerspace room will include a Lego wall, along with our Lego Robotics area. Next, is our 3D Printing and Design area. The students will begin by using 3D pens and filament, as well as learning more about 3D printing. The next area will be a Coding area. For this space, they will be using Chromebooks.
There will be a STEAM area with common household materials students can use to create and design whatever they wish. There will also be Task Cards which will be used for guidance- task cards will present a problem to the students. They will need to research and then come up with a solution to the problem.
The last of the major stations will be an animation station. The younger students can start to create simple paper and pencil animations, while our older students will also begin with learning the art of animation through paper and pencil. They will then move into creating characters with clay and drawing and painting scenery that will then be used with a program such as Stop Motion. They will create animated short videos. Students will need a digital camera for this station.
In late fall, the program will expand and create a paper-circuit center. Students will learn and experiment, as well as create circuits.
The new science curriculum and program is called science dimensions by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This program will be for all students in grades 3-8. The program is designed and aligned with the New Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The program utilizes the Three-Dimensional Learning Model of NGSS, as well as integrating engineering and STEM content. The Three Dimensional Learning Model consists of students actively engaging, applying, and understanding the core ideas across the different Science Disciplines- Physical Science, Earth Science, and Biology. An exciting part of this new program is the use of Virtual field trips sponsored by Google Expeditions. Students will use virtual reality goggles and a smartphone to travel into a virtual world. The virtual field trips are 3D, 360-degree panoramas from fascinating locations, tied directly to science content. HSA has also purchased all of the lab and STEM kits to enhance and bring to life each and every lesson. All of the science teachers at HSA will receive a full day of training on the implementation of this new and exciting program. The teachers and administration are thrilled to be bringing these new programs and curriculum to the students.
