ELIZABETH, NJ – Make the Road New Jersey members rallied and marched down Elizabeth Avenue Sunday, calling for Elizabeth to become a Sanctuary City and to draw attention to the national day of action for immigrant communities scheduled for Monday, May 1.

“We want our police to protect and not work for ICE [Immigration and Custom Enforcement],” said Elizabeth resident Olga Armas. “We are here to stay, and we want our city to be a sanctuary city.”

On May 1, some immigrants will not go to work or school, and some businesses are planning to close in support. A rally will take place at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

Maria Segovia made a call to action, saying, “I am making a call to all of Elizabeth. We don’t go to work. We don’t go to school tomorrow. We stand up together in Jersey City at Liberty State Park.”

Make the Road New Jersey manager Carlos Castanedo spoke of going business to business to enlist support with the result that 35 city businesses have signed a letter to the mayor supporting a sanctuary city designation.

“Immigrants are an important part of the Elizabeth community,” Castanedo stated. “We spent money here. We work here. We own businesses here, and we pay taxes. So tomorrow we will be standing up together to show our economic strength. When we are not working, when we are not going to school, we are showing our strength.”

Make the Road New Jersey is part of a national network. It is a non-profit, community organization championing immigrants and working class rights.

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all. It really was magic, but magic has rules, and she broke them. Even when they call it a 'senseless tragedy,' people always try to find a ...

Two Nights by Kathy Reichs (Bantom,2017)

How does a writer of a beloved series like Harry Potter or Temperance Brennan break out of their readers' expectations and try something new? For J.K. Her wardrobe came from ...
