Installation of Traffic Light at Woodland Ave & Oak Tree Road, Scheduled to Begin This Summer

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The installation of a traffic light at Woodland Avenue and Oak Tree Road is scheduled to begin this summer announced South Plainfield officials at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting. South Plainfield Administrator Glenn F. Cullen and Borough Engineer Len Miller reported on the construction timeline after meeting with Middlesex County officials last week.

“The project is scheduled to be bid by Middlesex County the last week of May, and the County is hoping to award a contract in June,” said Cullen. “The County engineer is estimating the project to last four months.”

“It is great to finally see that a traffic light at Woodland and Oak Tree is moving closer to becoming a reality,” said South Plainfield Mayor Matthew Anesh. “Once it is up and running, a traffic light will make this intersection much safer.”

According to officials, the project is much more than a traffic light installation at Woodland Avenue and Oak Tree Road. The traffic lights at Oak Park Commons Mall and the intersection of Oak Tree Road and Park Avenue are also being replaced. “There will be three new traffic lights, and the County is going to install new sidewalks on both sides of Oak Tree Road from Park Avenue and into Edison.”

The project, which is estimated to last for four months, will require a two week closure of Woodland Ave where it ends at Oak Tree Road. The closure is being done so construction crews can lower the grade of Woodland Avenue where it comes to a t-intersection at Oak Tree Road.

The cost of the roadway improvements are being shared by Middlesex County, the Borough of South Plainfield and Edison Township. The Borough enacted a $400,000 ordinance last year for the improvements, but the lions’ share of costs are going to be paid by Middlesex County.

“This project has been in the works for a while, and, I’m glad that we were able to come together with Edison and Middlesex County to get this done,” said Anesh.

Council President Derryck White and Councilman Jon Dean both echoed Mayor Anesh’s comments.

“I am very pleased this project is finally coming to fruition,” said Council President Derryck White. “It will improve the safety of the Woodland Ave and Oak Tree Road intersection. In addition, this project is a stark reminder municipalities and counties should and can work collaboratively. In the end the biggest beneficiaries are the residents and commuters who we have been elected to serve.”

“It’s great to see South Plainfield, Edison and Middlesex County working together to get this project complete at a cost shared by all parties,” said Dean. “As the years have gone by traffic has increased and there have been numerous accidents at this intersection. This will make it safer for residents and commuters.”

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
