Moth Night at the Highland Woods Nature Reserve

Sweetheart Underwing Moth is cryptic (hidden) on a tree with its front wings closed. If a bird comes near, it flashes the bright rear wings, startling the bird and giving the moth a chance to escape. Credits: BugGuide.net

Explore the darker side of the Lepidoptera – the butterfly’s nocturnal cousin the moth.  Join the Friends of the Woods and members of the South Plainfield Environmental Commission for some moth magic on Saturday night, July 22, from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m.  This event is being held during National Moth Week.

From www.nationalmothweek.org: "National Moth Week celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about, observe, and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods."

We will use lights and bait around the Nature Center to lure amazing moths into view.  Participants will learn the differences between moths and butterflies, and how to attract them as pollinators to the home garden.  No butterfly nets will be used on this expedition.  Bring your cameras and macro lenses to capture and document the moths that come.

Moth Night last August revealed many species of moths, including the beautiful Orange Underwing Moth.  Environmental Commission member Christina Van Wyk, a Master Gardener, expects that in July we will have a chance to see different species as well, that are active earlier in the summer.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the Nature Reserve’s night life.  This is a fun event for adults and for children age 7 and up.  Long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes and insect repellent are strongly recommended.  A flashlight would be useful for staying on the trails, but these should not be used near the moth lights.

There is no fee and no preregistration is required.

The Nature Center at Highland Woods is located at 115 Sylvania Place, off South Clinton Avenue in South Plainfield.  For further information, contact atempel@southplainfieldnj.com.

The Best Sad Day

When you don’t have to adhere to a train schedule or work a nine to five job, it’s easier to make spontaneous vacation plans.

Since I was braving a trip back to Maine in June to mark one year since the accident, I decided to add an extra week to my excursion.  I would knock off two more states in my bucket list quest to hike a part of the Appalachian Trail in every state.

"Shall We Begin?" Winter Comes to Westeros on Game of Thrones

July 19, 2017

Considering Game of Thrones fans waited 448 days for the premiere of the shortest season to date, many were disappointed by the anticlimactic nature of Sunday’s episode. But the way I see it, Ed Sheeran cameo aside, the show writers did everything right: enemies were destroyed, crucial information was revealed and the stage was set for absolute chaos in Westeros.

Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard

Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard (Henry Holt and Co., 2013)

As a student of history, I don't know why I thought that reading Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard would be any more satisfying than their previous two publications, Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy. Having now finished the rapid read, I would put the O'Reilly/Dugard books in ...
