NJSIAA-sponsored, annual awards luncheon hosted by Seton Hall University

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (January 30, 2017) – NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association) sponsored yesterday’s annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration,  which recognized the exceptional scholastic and collegiate athletic accomplishments of female athletes across New Jersey. The awards luncheon was hosted by Seton Hall University.

West Essex High School’s head field hockey and girls’ lacrosse coach, Jill Cosse-Minnella, received this year’s prestigious National Girls and Women in Sports High School Honor Award.  Cosse-Minnella is a former dual-sport, national champion student-athlete at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey).  The head field hockey and girls’ lacrosse coach at West Essex since 1998, she has amassed a combined 14 state championship titles.

“This coalition is doing exceptional work in getting more girls confidently involved in sports,” Cosse-Minnella said.  “The benefits of participation in scholastic sports are innumerable, and all students should be encouraged to participate and have their achievements celebrated.”

Additional awards and honors were presented during the luncheon, which was held at the Richie Recreation Center on the campus of Seton Hall University.  (To see a full list of award recipients, please visit this link.) All luncheon attendees received complimentary admission into the Seton Hall Women’s Basketball game versus Butler University immediately following the event.

“Coach Cosse-Minnella embodies the core values of NJSIAA,” said Steven J. Timko, executive director of NJSIAA.  “She has not only been successful on the field, but has stressed academic achievement and good citizenship off the field.”

About National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) - National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a special day in our nation’s capital to recognize women’s sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite female athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. In 1987, NGWSD also served as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, for her athletic achievements and dedication to promoting equality for women’s sports; Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986. NGWSD has since evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

NGWSD is celebrated annually across all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and other celebratory activities. NGWSD is organized by the members of the National Girls & Women in Sports Day Coalition. Champion women athletes have also contributed to annual NGWSD activities. For more information, please visit:

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
