NEWARK, NJ – A man who police say stole a vehicle owned by a Union resident which was left unattended and running with a two-year old sleeping inside has been arrested.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, police arrested Sanders Martin Gomes, 40, for stealing the vehicle on Monday, July 10.

According to Newark police, at approximately 2:27 p.m., police responded to 146 Ferry Street on a carjacking call.  A 24-year old Union woman reported that she parked her car with her 2-year-old daughter asleep inside to unload groceries at a relative’s house. When she returned from one of her trips, her car was missing.

Within minutes, police located the car less than 400 feet away on Adams Street with the child still inside.  The child, who appeared to be unharmed, was taken to University Hospital to be examined.  The victim’s cell phone was stolen during the carjacking.

Major Crimes detectives received a tip from a concerned citizen that Gomes, a suspect in the carjacking, was getting a haircut at a barbershop located at Broad and South streets. Gomes, who was also wanted on outstanding warrants, was immediately arrested without incident, according to police.

Gomes is charged with carjacking and endangering the welfare of a child. He is also charged with possession of CDS, as he was found in possession of six glassine envelopes of heroin, a vial of crack cocaine and a small container of cocaine when he was taken into custody.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Director Ambrose thanks those concerned citizens who continue to partner with police by providing crime tips. “When our residents assist us by providing tips that identify suspects and offer information about their whereabouts, we can be more effective in quickly arresting them and removing them from our streets.” he said.
