PLAINFIELD, NJ - Sixty four students strolled across the tracks of the Hub Stein Field this afternoon under sunny blue skies to hear parting words of advice and encouragement and accept their graduation certificates. Today’s ceremony was the fifth for the Plainfield Academy of the Arts and Advanced Studies.
The academic procession was lead by Superintendent Dr. Ronald Bolandi, Principal Dr. Angela Bento and Vice Principal Mrs. Aurora Hill followed by Board of Education members and the PAAAS school faculty.
Mrs. Hill’s opening remarks quoted a popular Dr. Seuss book “Oh, The Places You will Go” – you are the ones who will decide where you go.
Jaylen Ross, 2018 class valedictorian, congratulated his peers and began his comments by saying that his experience at PAAAS developed him into the man he wants to become in the future. Jaylen stressed the importance of character in our lives and reminded graduates to reflect on the foundation built during their time at the school. He ended with a simple message, “We are going to be okay, we are going to be alright and we are going to do well. We will each meet our own definitions of success.”
Salutatorian, Arianna Diaz encouraged her fellow graduates of the importance of having a positive support system and also being one for someone else and not being afraid to fail. Diaz shared her definition of “Fail” with her fellow graduates - first attempt in learning. Be the change you wish to seek and others will learn from your actions.
The commencement message was given by Othell Miller. Millers’ keynote message to the graduates was to be present and take in every minute of graduation. He also charged the students to exercise the five C’s as a strategy to enhance and improve the world: be conscious, be considerate, be creative, collaborate with others and be committed.
Congratulations to the PAAAS class of 2018!
