Plainfield Board of Ed Names Sheard Acting Superintendent

Dr. Debra J. Sheard, Acting Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools Credits: Plainfield Public Schools

PLAINFIELD, NJ - April 13, 2017 -  The Plainfield Board of Education named Dr. Debra J. Sheard, Acting Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools, at its meeting Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Plainfield High School.  Dr. Sheard, the Assistant Superintendent for Plainfield schools has been at the helm of the district since February 6, 2017 while the Board settled a transfer agreement with former Superintendent of Schools Anna Belin-Pyles.   

Dr. Sheard began her tenure as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in October 2016.  Since that time, she has worked tirelessly with district stakeholders to ensure a collaborative commitment to academic excellence for district students.  Some of those accomplishments include implementing an Administrators’ Study Council for Principals, Vice-Principals, Directors & Supervisors, hosting Curriculum Council Meetings for Teachers and Superintendent Roundtable for Parents, hosting an Education Forum for Community Stakeholders, and scheduling a series of Listening Tours throughout the Plainfield School District.

Dr. Sheard has over 22 years of education experience including as administrator at the highest levels having served as Assistant Superintendent in Kearny Public School District. Dr. Sheard is a passionate advocate for educational equity. She has had several opportunities to impact change in education.  While serving at Kearny Public Schools, in partnership with Teacher’s College, she helped implement Readers Workshops strategy of reform, working to improve student achievement and eliminate achievement gaps. She also has school turnaround experience, having significantly improved achievement and closed achievement gaps at the middle schools in Perth Amboy Public Schools, Perth Amboy, NJ. During her career as an educator, Dr. Sheard has served as an interim superintendent, assistant superintendent, middle school principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and director of technology. She began her career as an elementary school teacher.

She is a 2004 graduate of Seton Hall University where she was awarded her Executive Doctorate in Education, (Executive Ed.D.)  in Education, Leadership, Management and Policy. 

"I'm very proud to be named Acting Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools and I look forward to continuing to challenge our students and move our education forward on behalf of the children of this district," said Dr. Sheard.

 The Board said the appointment of Dr. Sheard shall be until it “appoints a full-time Superintendent of Schools or an Interim Superintendent of schools or until the close of business on June 30,2017, whichever is sooner.”

 At last night’s meeting it was resolved that Mrs. Belin-Pyles will return to the position as Director of Student Intervention & Family Support Services, effective April 12, 2017.
