The 2020 USA Football Heart of a Giant Award, presented by Hospital for Special Surgery and NY Giants, honors high school athletes who inspire greatness both on and off the field. Another set of outstanding Tri-State area high school football player nominees have been announced, and the list includes Plainfield High School's Joshua Cordoba who has been nominated by his Cardinals football coach for commitment, teamwork, will, character and dedication.
Joshua Cordoba believes the word “dedication” describes him the most. Cordoba has been playing on the varsity team since his freshman year. Since then, his team has had a losing season every year. “I’ve been playing Varsity since my freshman year and every year we lose, lose and lose but that doesn’t stop me, I try and try again to keep my teammates heads up and try and change the culture in my town so that the future can have players that try their best and will never lose,” said Cordoba. Plainfield High School’s Head Football Coach, Don Sofilkanich, thinks dedication is what makes Cordoba the great leader he is today. “When we think of a leader, we think of Josh Cordoba; he gives one hundred percent effort every day and keeps his teammates accountable to do the same,” said Sofilkanich. Cordoba said no matter what happens, he will always be dedicated to his team, so they can win.
Other nominees this round include:
- Mikai Gbayor; Irvington High School
- Yosue Gomez; Passaic County Technical School in Wayne
