PLAINFIELD, NJ - Newly elected Plainfield Democratic City Committee members met Monday evening to reorganize following the June 4 Primary Election.  The meeting began with Chairman Adrian O. Mapp vacating his position, and with member Joylette Mills-Ransome appointed as Chair Pro Tem.

The next item of business was to break the tie for Ward 2, District 2 between Column A's Geraldine Harvey, and Column B's Mary Beth Merari.  Members voted by a show of certificates, and Harvey was declared the winner, 40 to 7.

Steve Hockaday then nominated Mapp for Committee Chair; no other nominations were made, and he was approved with 49 votes out of a possible 68.

"Well, I want to say thanks to each and every one of you who voted to have me return as the chairperson of our local Plainfield Democratic City Committee," Mapp said, pledging to do all he can to make the party successful year after year.

Mapp next presented an Executive Committee slate:

  • Joylette Mill-Ransome - 1st Vice Chair
  • Steve Hockaday – 2nd Vice Chair
  • Annette Brent – 3rd Vice Chair
  • Charles McRae – 4th Vice Chair
  • Corresponding Secretary – Carmencita Pile
  • Recording Secretary – Robin Bright
  • Treasurer – Ayisha Mapp
  • Sergeant of Arms – Dr. Darcela Sessomes

Sean McKenna questioned the selection of Mapp's daughter, who is not a PDCC member, as Treasurer, and suggested that someone on the committee would be more appropriate. Mapp responded that the selections were made with input from several individuals on election night, and that state law does allow for his daughter's position.

No other Executive Committee slates were presented, and a vote was taken, overwhelmingly approved with 45 votes to 10.

Elected committee members assembled in groups to select a Ward leader who would become a part of the Executive Committee.  The following individuals were selected:

  • Ward 1 – Robert Graham
  • Ward 2 – Michael Pyne
  • Ward 3 – Ron Scott Bey
  • Ward 4 – Stacey Welch

Pyne suggested that the council winners of the Primary Election be allowed to say a few words.  "There's a lot of healing that needs to occur."

McKenna thanked everyone for their support, adding, "I look forward to working with all of you in all wards, because council members vote on issues that affect the entire city, not just their wards."

Barry Goode also thanked those in attendance for all of the support he received during the campaign.

Prior to the adjournment of the meeting, Ward 2 member Mary Burgwinkle voiced her concern regarding Mapp’s endorsement of Nick Scutari for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee without convening a committee meeting with all 68 Plainfield members.

Mapp responded, saying that calls had been placed to members, although some could be overheard saying they never received one.  An announcement, he said, was also made after last week's election when unofficial votes were being tallied.
