PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Rev. Al Sharpton posted a picture of himself with Mayor Adrian O. Mapp on Instagram today. According to the post, the two were meeting to discuss gun violence in the City of Plainfield.
There were twelve homicides in the city in 2016, and there is an Interfaith Remembrance ceremony for the victims scheduled for this Friday.
The picture is also being shared on a Facebook group page called the Plainfield Anti-Violence Coalition.
In August 2010 under then-Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs, Sharpton had attended a Town Meeting that was broadcast on WBLS and WLIB radio stations. His visit had, according to Plaintalker II, become "the focus of a City Council investigation over a $20,000 fee." Robinson-Briggs was reprimanded in a ruling in June 2012.
In 2013, Robinson-Briggs again invited Sharpton to an event held at a local nightclub as she was running for re-election in her bid for a third term. She lost to Mapp.
