ELIZABETH, NJ – This week’s Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting was dedicated exclusively to the presentation of checks.  “Senior Focus” and “Infrastructure and Municipal Aid” grants were presented to mayors, council members and representatives from towns across the county.

Council President-at-Large Rebecca Williams was on hand to accept the checks for Plainfield.  "Along with the City Administrator, Rick Smiley, and the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, Veronica Taylor, it was exciting to receive these two grants, presented to us by the Freeholder Board. The $100,000 check will be of great assistance to us as we continue the road improvement program begun under Mayor Mapp, which has already paved upwards of 20 miles of Plainfield's roads."

Williams added, "The $25,000 Senior Focus Grant, written by Veronica Taylor, will be used to help outfit and update a fitness center for our older active adults at the Plainfield Senior Citizens Center, and will also go to purchasing more equipment for our very active Sewing and Quilting classes at the Center. We are very grateful to the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders for their ongoing support of Plainfield's initiatives."

“Maybe we should do this on a weekly basis,” joked Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky, joined by Councilman David Oliveira, as he accepted an Infrastructure and Municipal Aid grant of $100,000 from the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders Thursday. “Westfield will certainly put this to good use.”

“Thank you for giving us this money because it helps keep our streets safe,” said Roselle Mayor, Christine Dansereau, who accepted a check that will go towards roadway improvements in her municipality. “What we sometimes forget is that dangerous roads cause accidents.”

Infrastructure and Municipal Aid Grants ranged from $15,000 to $100,000 for a total of $1.5m across the county. “That’s $1.5 million which will be backed up by the municipality. That’s $3 million in roads and infrastructure improvements this year – $9 million over the last three years,” Freeholder Christopher Hudak said.

Mayor Mapp: Reunir las familias

June 24, 2018

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...

I wanted to like Into the Water by Paula Hawkins because I had enjoyed her previous novel, The Girl on the Train, which was a suspenseful thriller.
