PLAINFIELD, NJ - Registration is currently underway for the Community Walk-Off Challenge, a part of Mayor Adrian O. Mapp's Wellness Campaign.
Participants in the challenge will receive a free pedometer, and prizes will be awarded to the Walk-Off Champion and the top three men and women. The Community Walk-Off Challenge starts on Monday, August 7th, and will end on October 30th.
There are numerous benefits to walking. The activity burns body fat, and raises your metabolism; it lowers high blood pressure, and helps to promote a restful night’s sleep. Research shows walking helps prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Did you know that you would have to walk the entire length of a football field to burn off just one plain M&M? You will have to walk more than 3,000 steps to burn a 12 oz. can of Coke, over 12,000 to burn off that Big Mac, and you will have to take almost 24,000 steps for that chicken burrito from Chipotle!
Need help getting started? Meetup.com has a number of walking groups that meet regularly in the Plainfield area. Freewalkers is another walking group that plans a variety of walking events.
Escape to nature! There are 36 parks in Union County. Why not spend a day wandering around Watchung Reservation? A variety of trails abound, offering something for everyone. Download the trail map.
