PLAINFIELD, NJ – Isabella Charles, a student at Plainfield Public School’s Evergreen School, won first place with her poem Beautiful Nature at the fifth grade level in the 2018 Union County Arbor Day Poetry Contest.
Charles, 11, will be recognized at the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders agenda setting session on April 26 at 7 p.m. in Elizabeth.
"It's an honor and privilege to have Isabella representing Evergreen Elementary School,” said Acting Principal Juan Pablo Jimenez. “She is an amazing student and I know this award is just the beginning. Congratulations to her and her beautiful family."
Homeroom teacher Kenyetta Knight, who inspired Charles to write the poem said, “Isabella puts the 'A' in Awesome. I have known her since Kindergarten and she continues to excel as a student and a person. She is a role model to her peers.”
The contest was open to students from 4th through 8th grade from over 79 schools throughout Union County. The winners are selected by a group of volunteer judges.
