The full press release about the performance follows:

Join us on April 29, 2017 at 7 pm when the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Charles Prince, will present a program featuring several acclaimed works by the French composer Maurice Ravel, who wrote some of the most intensely beautiful and perfectly-crafted "impressionist" music of the 20th century. Frederic Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will complete this elegant program.

Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is a sensitive memorial piece set in a Baroque Suite form.  Originally composed as a suite for solo piano between 1914 and 1917, each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer. The 1919 orchestral version in four movements (Prélude, Forlane, Menuet and Rigaudon) will be performed.

Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 is one of two suites that Ravel orchestrated from his ballet.  The music contains yearning melodies and extraordinarily lush harmonies combined with great rhythmic drive to create one of the composer’s most masterful statements of the Impressionist movement. This 2nd Suite includes much of the last part of the original ballet and concludes with the popular "Danse Générale”.

No Ravel program would be complete without his iconic, most popular work, Boléro. This one-movement orchestral piece also was originally composed in 1928 as a ballet work. After an opening rhythm on the snare drum, a rhythm that continues unabated throughout the work, the piece proceeds as a set of 18 orchestrations of one theme by different instruments building to a climatic ending.

Marking her second appearance with the PSO, the featured soloist in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, op.21 will be 17 year-old Helen Shen, the Gold Medal winner of the 2016 Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey. As a winner of several YPCNJ competitions, Helen has performed numerous times at Weill Recital Hall, at Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall in New York.  This piece contains one of the most beautiful slow movements in the piano repertoire. This Larghetto movement was inspired by Chopin's distant idolization of Constantia Gladowska, a Polish soprano of the time whom Chopin was in love with during his conservatory days.
