On July 8, the Denville Police Department took a report of neglect to a 91 year old woman by her home health care aide, identified as Carla Caraballo. In gathering of all the evidence for the case, Caraballo was seen and heard on home surveillance footage neglecting her patient, which caused the patient to fall and suffer a significant head injury.
The investigation showed that Caraballo demanded that the patient stay in bed and not get up. A threat was made that she would leave the patient on the floor all night if she got up on her own and fell. While watching the patient try to get up, Caraballo refused to assist the patient. After suffering a bad fall and sustaining injuries, the patient was left in place for a prolonged period of time, while calling for help, prior to the aid calling for emergency services.
Caraballo was arrested at her home in Plainfield, NJ and was charged with neglect of an elderly person under N.J.S. 2C:24-8A. She was remanded to the Morris County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
