SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The Democratic Municipal Committees within the 22nd Legislative District, which includes Union, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, met on May 19 at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. The committees voted to elect Union County Freeholder Linda Carter to fill the LD22 NJ State Assembly vacancy caused by the passing of longtime Assemblyman Jerry Green.
Carter said at a May 8 Plainfield Democratic City Committee meeting, "You know, sometimes it's... things happen. When the passing of Asssemblyman Green came around, you know, he was such a huge giant in our community. Someone who really fought for those that were less fortunate. But he fought for everyone. He fought for Plainfield, he fought for those in legislative district 22."
She had added, "Legislatively, we want to make sure that Plainfield is represented, but also, all of our municipalities in LD22 are represented. We want to make sure that we're fighting for the same values that Democrats believe in, and we're also making sure that the legislation is put forth that will, you know what, continue to have us grow and prosper."
The Assembly will meet on May 24, at which point Carter will be sworn in.
The replacement of Carter's Freeholder position requires a Union County Democratic Committee convention that would bring together all 21 county municipalities.
