PLAINFIELD, NJ - As part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program, Plainfield's Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) summer camp attendees will hold its Summer Showcase presentation this week.
Although school is out and the summer is known as a time for fun and recreation, the SSYC summer camp keeps pace with continued learning in the key STEAM areas. Research shows that during the summer, most youth, particularly those from lower income families with fewer resources, fail to fully retain what they have learned the prior school year. The losses have been shown to be most acute in the areas of reading and math and without the proper learning stimulation and healthy meals, a serious summer slide occurs.
The goal at SSYC is for kids to have an active, healthy summer full of enriched learning; smarter summers lead to brighter futures. From drumming to dance, drama to engineering design, swimming to science, chorus to coding, group performance to open play, the aim at SSYC is to enjoy healthy food, fun, friendship as well as social and educational growth.
In its Summer Showcase presentation, one can view the campers’ completed projects, watch a demonstration of Latin dance, hear African drumming, observe a live science demonstration and see Robotics in action.
Help SSYC celebrate the accomplishments of Plainfield’s youth on Wednesday, Aug. 30th at 3:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. SSYC is located at 935 South Second Street in Plainfield.
