Summer is definitely here, as evidenced by the rising temperatures! Before you head outdoors and down to the shore, here are a few reminders from Rapps Pharmacy, an independent, full service, and locally owned Plainfield neighborhood pharmacy:

As people begin to the enjoy the summer sun, they become more prone to the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Sunscreens can prevent sunburn, reduce your risk of getting skin cancer, and help prevent early signs of skin aging. Find a product with these three qualities to help protect yourself from the sun.

  1. Broad Spectrum: A broad spectrum sunscreen protects the skin from ultraviolet A(UVA) and ultraviolet B(UVB) rays, both of which can cause cancer
  2. SPF of 30 or higher : SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is an indicator of how much protection a sunscreen offers against UVB rays, which is the primary cause of sunburn. Most health care providers, as well as the American Academy of Dermatology, recommend a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. A higher SPF may be required for individuals who are fair skinned or if you anticipate prolonged or intense sun exposure. It is important to remember that high-number SPFs last the same amount of time as low-number SPFs and should still be reapplied every two hours
  3. Water Resistant: Sunscreens are not waterproof or sweat proof and need to be reapplied every two hours. Water resistant sunscreens must be reapplied 40-80 minutes after swimming or excessive sweating

Apply one ounce of sunscreen (an amount you can hold in your palm) to all exposed body parts at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Rub sunscreen thoroughly into the skin, remembering to cover the neck, face, ears, tops of your feet, legs, and back. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. In addition to sunscreen, consider using wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, or long pants to further cover exposed skin. Talk to your pharmacist or health care provider to find the sunscreen that works best for you.
