MATAWAN, NJ — A Roselle Park Police officer shot himself in the head after being involved in a crash in Matawan Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

While authorities were investigating the crash, the officer removed a gun and fired one shot killing himself on scene, Roselle Park Police Chief Daniel J. McCaffery said. 

“We are grieving as a department for the loss of our officer,” McCaffery said.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating, authorities said.

The name of the officer is being withheld at this time. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
