NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Eight students from area high schools received a total of $24,375 in scholarships from the Adele DeLeeuw Scholarship Fund at a dinner held recently at the Spain Inn in Piscataway. The scholarships are financed by a bequest from Adele DeLeeuw, a longtime Plainfield resident, author of 75 books, journalist and arts activist.
Scholarship recipients from the graduating class of 2017 included Joshua Schmidt and Zachary Velling from Watchung Hills Regional High School, and Kenar Myers from Plainfield. The Scholarship Fund also provided continuing scholarships to college students Melody Njoku and Brenda Okereke from North Plainfield High School, and Anthony Raphael and Christopher Silva from Watchung Hills Regional High School. This year’s Adele DeLeeuw Senior Scholars, students who were recognized as scholarship recipients from the Fund for each of their four years in college, included Seneca Velling from Watchung Hills Regional High School. An additional fifteen students from area high schools also received scholarships from the Fund.
The Plainfield-North Plainfield Rotary club administers the Adele DeLeeuw Scholarship Fund and is one of five local Rotary clubs that provide scholarships from the Fund to students in their communities who pursue a course of study in poetry, art, journalism, writing or engineering. Sixty-three thousand dollars was distributed this year to twenty-three area students by the Fund, a fund of the Plainfield Foundation. This year’s awards bring the Fund’s twenty-two year total distribution to over $1,250,000.
Applications for the 2018 Adele DeLeeuw Scholarships will be available in January from the NorthPlainfield and Watchung area high school guidance offices. For further information, call Johanna Salvemini, Scholarship Administrator, at (908) 755-8098.
