SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - On Monday, September 1, 2014, South Plainfield will host the 57th Annual Labor Day Parade. The parade will be led by the South Plainfield High School Marching Band and this year’s honorary grand marshal, Guy Moretti, a long time businessman and lifelong resident. The theme of this year’s parade is “Winter Wonderland. “ This year the Celebration Committee will offer a prize and trophy for the best float depicting the "Winter Wonderland" theme.

The parade judges will be stationed at the reviewing stand on the corner of Plainfield Avenue and Lake Avenue in front of the Middle School.  The judges who have participated for the past several years are: Bob Longo, Jim Gustafson, Ricky McCriskin, Calvin Gross, Tom Lanza, Tony Massaro and Shannon Jefferys.  The parade announcers are William Cochrane who will be located at the reviewing stand and South Plainfield School District Athletic Director Al Czech, who will be located in front of Borough Hall/Police Department.

The South Plainfield Labor Day Parade was originated by George Page, who headed the Parade Committee, as a way for borough residents to stay home and enjoy Labor Day with their families.

The South Plainfield Education Foundation sponsors the 24th annual 5K race and 1.5 mile family fun fitness walk.  Registration begins at 8:15 am on the Lake Avenue next to the Middle School.  The Race/Walk begins at 9:30 am and trophies will be awarded when all racers have completed the course.

The Labor Day Parade begins at 10:00 am at the Police Athletic League Building (PAL).  A sign will be located on Maple Avenue and Cady Lane directing the various floats and marchers where to line up.  The roads in and around the PAL will be closed at approximately 9:00 am.

Residents typically begin placing chairs along the sidewalk areas of the parade route early Labor Day morning.  The parade route runs down Maple Avenue onto Plainfield Avenue past the Borough Hall and continues down Plainfield Avenue and turns right by the 7-11 store, past the Middle School and ends at the reviewing stand.

The parade will consist of the South Plainfield High School Marching Band, the South Plainfield Chief of Police and McGruff the Police Dog, the Mayor and Council, Republican and Democratic Clubs and their candidates, The South Plainfield Board of Education Superintendent and board members, cartoon characters, civic groups, businesses, various teams and floats that are decorated by many groups, (i.e. girl scouts, boy scouts, bands, SP Football Eagles and Cheerleaders, etc).  The categories for the trophies to be awarded are: Honorary Grand Marshal chosen by the Grand Marshal, Judges Trophy, which is the best overall entry determined by the judges, Best Civic Entry in the name of George W.L. Page, Best Youth Entry, Most Patriotic Entry, Best Antique Vehicle, Most Outstanding Float, Best Civic Entry, Most Outstanding Visiting Entry from outside South Plainfield, Marie D. Page Trophy for best overall marching entry and the Best Theme Float which best represents the theme of the parade. This year there will be a $300.00 cash prize donated by The Alternative Press of South Plainfield (TAP into South Plainfield) for the Best Theme Float. This is the first time a cash prize will be award to the Best Theme Float. The prize will be determined by the judges.

Following the Parade there will be the annual community picnic at the South Plainfield Middle School with live musical entertainment by "9 South" food, games, rides for children, free activities including a giant funhouse, slide and much more. There will also be vendors and local business displays.  The festivities will end with a fireworks display by Pyrotecnico in the Spring Lake Park with music by "AMP'd" beginning at 6:00 pm. Free glow sticks will be handed out while supplies last. Roads will be closed at 8:15 p.m. and fireworks will begin at 8:45 p.m.

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...
