Still Time to Register For Plainfield's Second Street Youth Center Summer Camp

Credits: Second Street Youth Center (SSYC)

PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) still has space available for its Summer Camp program which serves kids in ages 5 to 12 and begins July 3.

A typical day begins with a nutritious snack; a healthy lunch and afternoon snack is also provided. Camp participants are organized into six or seven groups and age appropriate activities are offered to each. While at the SSYC facility, the kids are in classrooms, game rooms, the library, computer lab, playground or multi-purpose room which also serves as a lunch room. Many of the children leave the premises to visit one of the following; a local swimming pool, sports field, professional sports activity, science center, theatrical production, bowling alley, museum, park, camp ground, the beach, amusement park, New York City, or other attraction. SSYC also offers overnight trips.

One of the primary goals is to prevent “summer slide.” Many of our camp attendees bring with them from school a summer homework or learning activity packet and our counselors provide ample time for tutoring, mentoring and coaching. An effort is also made to bring “learning” resources to the SSYC facility. In the past, this has included individuals who taught specialized skills such as art, music, dance, vocal and acting skills. Magicians, musicians, artists, and educators have also visited and brought their special talents.

In 2012, SSYC introduced a STEAM (Science., Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) component into its After-School program. These areas of focus areas are increasingly necessary to succeed in an ever-competitive world and it is our duty to help our campers and students utilize these skills to better compete in school, college and the workplace. SSYC is proud to announce that elements of STEAM are now incorporated in the Summer Camp program. SSYC has expanded its number of computers and rooms with computer access so more children can reap the benefits of the STEAM programming.

This summer youth will participate in the Arts with Latin dance, African drums, chorus and dramatic arts. There will be a full array of science, engineering and technology offerings, inclusive of Lego Robotics and Coding. Our summer will end with a Summer Showcase where our youth will share all they learned and accomplished with their parents and the community.

SSYC commenced operation in 1967 and serves the greater Plainfield community with a Pre-School, After-School, Summer Camp and Teen Leadership program.

For more information or to sign your kids up contact Ms. Altarica Ruff at 908-561-0421 ext. 110 or

Hay momentos en la historia en los que seremos juzgados no por nuestras acciones, sino por la falta de acción. En los últimos meses, hemos visto acciones ...

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (William Morrow, 2018)

A friend, whose opinion on literature I respect greatly, reported to me recently that she had just finished reading A.J. Finn's debut novel, The Woman in the Window. Of it she said, “I wish I hadn't finished it,” which I interpreted to mean, “It was so good I'm sorry that I finished it.” ...

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly

When the Men Go Off to War by Victoria Kelly (Naval Institute Press, 2015)

Victoria Kelly's first published volume of poetry, When the Men Go Off to War, is a wonder in that poems can be written so beautifully about the subject of war. Each poem is a jewel, polished and colorful, glittering with elegant imagery, and rich in emotional wallop. The book, divided into three sections, ...

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani (Ballentine Books, 2005)

The Queen of the Big Time by Adriana Trigiani, a New York Times best selling author, was recommended to me by a young woman who actually came from the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania, the place where the novel is set. “The author did such a wonderful job of describing how the town actually is,” said the young lady.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah (St. Martin's Press, 2018)

What is the “final frontier” on the Earth's surface? Many people would say Alaska, the 49th state, which was added to the United States fifty years ago. Into the Water by Paula Hawkins (Riverhead Books, 2017)

I wanted to like Into the Water by Paula Hawkins because I had enjoyed her previous novel, The Girl on the Train, which was a suspenseful thriller. However, when I finished reading the first part of the Into the Water, I realized that I had not absorbed anything that was happening in the story. I blamed myself for not paying ...
