RIO -- After giving New Jersey and her country an exciting run, Sydney McLaughlin's first Olympics competition ended Tuesday evening when the Union Catholic track star did not advance to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles in Rio.
McLaughlin, 17, the youngest Team USA athlete since 1972, finished fifth in her 400-meter hurdles semifinal with a time of 56.22.
Union Catholic wasted little time in congratulating the rising senior on the high school's Facebook page:
Congratulations, Sydney, on an amazing run! The UC Community is so proud. #UCinRio #vikingpride #Rio2016 #SydtheKid #TeamUSA
Many are predicting that McLaughlin, who will still be 20 years old when the Olympics are next held in Tokyo, will be back on the international stage.
