Willow Grove Presbyterian Church of Scotch Plains invites the community to worship services that help deepen one’s spiritual life and focus on the meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The services reflect the last week of Jesus’ life. Children and youth are encouraged to participate in the services.
The community is invited to a Tenebrae Service of Shadows on Friday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. It is a dramatic worship service that will include scripture readings and hymns. The choir will present special music, including "Carry Him Gently." The Lord's Supper will be celebrated, and the service culminates in a dramatic scene as the congregation is invited to come forward to nail their own prayers to a large wooden cross.
As the solemn service progresses, lighted candles will gradually be extinguished, and finally the congregation will exit in silence and in darkness. The service is hosted by the congregations of First United Methodist Church of Scotch Plains and Willow Grove Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney and The Rev. Dr. Carletta Aston will lead the service.
The Easter Sunday worship service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 27. An exciting celebration of Christ’s resurrection, this service will include jubilant music and joyful worship. Willow Grove will welcome a guest trumpet player, Florian Schantz, from Westfield and guest organist Fred Briegs from Woodbridge. The choir will sing “A Gaelic Easter Anthem.”
Children are invited to participate in activities, including a hunt for Easter Joy bags. A special offering for One Great Hour of Sharing will be taken which provides funding for disaster response and refugee assistance. The Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney will preach on “The Most Important Word on Easter… and Always.”
Coffee and refreshments will served after worship. Nursery care is available throughout the morning.
