PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Plainfield Symphony kicked off its 97th season last night at Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church.  The pews were full, and the sounds of Mozart and Shostakovich reverberated throughout.

President Peter Lomonaco introduced the evening's performance, and noted with sadness the passing of Harry Ailster, a long time symphony board member and Plainfield volunteer, who died on August 7th.  The night's performance was dedicated to Harry, who is sorely missed by the community.

The night opened with Mozart's Symphony No. 36 "Linz", written in 1783 as an homage to Joseph Haydn and the great Viennese symphonic tradition.

After a brief intermission, the second half featured Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, written in 1953, the year of Stalin's death.  Shostakovich had called this a "musical portrait of Stalin".

"Unfortunately, this symphony is rarely performed, mainly because of its extreme difficulty.  I feel that this is a true musical masterpiece which deserves to be, and needs to be heard more often, not only as a great work of art, but also as a testament to those who have lost their lives struggling under oppressive totalitarian regimes now and throughout history," according to Conductor and Musical Director Charles Prince.

The audience was invited to a reception after the performance to mingle, and enjoy drinks and sweets.

The next performance, "Sondheim Tonight!" will take place on Saturday, November 19th, and tickets may be purchased in advanced on the Plainfield Symphony's website.

Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church is locate at 716 Watchung Avenue in Plainfield.

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb

Prayers the Devil Answers by Sharyn McCrumb (Altria, 2015)

Years later, after the tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb Supper and what had happened there. That was the cause of it, they said, because the ritual wasn't a game after all. It really was magic, but magic has rules, and she broke them. Even when they call it a 'senseless tragedy,' people always try to find a ...

How does a writer of a beloved series like Harry Potter or Temperance Brennan break out of their readers' expectations and try something new? For J.K.
