PLAINFIELD, NJ - Two National Night Out celebrations will take place on Tuesday, August 1st in the City of Plainfield.

Each year, residents of Plainfield celebrate National Night Out, a national event that fosters relationships between neighbors and law enforcement to build safer communities.

A back-to-school book bag drive is currently underway for the event at City Hall Plaza, at 515 Watchung Avenue.  School supply and book bag donations are being accepted through July 25.  The National Night Out event will feature a kids' zone, live music, safety demos, and more.  Book bags and school supplies will be given away while supplies last.

Find out how you can donate by contacting Plainfield Action Services at City Hall, 510 Watchung Avenue, or call 908-753-3519.

The Plainfield Stigma Free Zone will also have a table at City Hall, and Mental Health Stigma Free lawn signs will be distributed to those who had previously asked for one. There will be extras for residents who did not have an opportunity to request one in advance.

Across town, Netherwood Heights Neighbors will once again host a National Night Out event at Leland Park next to Cook School.

Netherwood Heights Neighbors will provide food and drinks, but the group asks attendees to consider bringing a side dish or dessert to share.

Speaking of sweets, there will be a dessert contest judged by the NHN Board.  The winner will receive a gift card from The Coffee Box.  There will also be face painting for the kids.

For questions about the Netherwood Heights Neighbors event, email netherwoodneighbors@gmail.com.

Both Plainfield events begin at 6:30 pm.  Tell your friends, bring a lawn chair, and remember to leave your porch light on in recognition of National Night Out.

February 20, 2018

Dear Editor,

As a voting democratic committee member and a concerned, involved taxpaying resident in the city of Plainfield for over 40 years I felt compelled to respond to Deanna Dell-Bene letter, as well as other Mahr supporters on the PDCC.  While I don’t personally know Colleen Mahr and will not speak of her character I do know Mayor Mapp and can certainly attest to ...

Two Nights by Kathy Reichs

Two Nights by Kathy Reichs (Bantom,2017)

How does a writer of a beloved series like Harry Potter or Temperance Brennan break out of their readers' expectations and try something new? For J.K. Rowlings it was the novels penned under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith; books about a maimed and very flawed private detective with the unlikely name of Cormoran Strike. For Kathy Reichs, it is the ...

Drama by Raina Telgemeir

Drama by Raina Telgemeier (Scholastic, 2012) (target audience, Young Adults)

When my daughter, Shauna, was six years old, we took her to see her first Broadway production; a revival of The Wiz starring Stephanie Mills. I knew that it was the last time Mills could get away with playing Dorothy, and I impressed upon Shauna that seeing this show was a special moment in her life. As a ...

The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory

The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory (Touchstone, 2017)

Yesterday my cousin, the daughter of my mother's sister, called me from California where she lives, and hit me up for money. This is not the first time she has asked me for money, and not the last, I am sure. She grew up the daughter of a privileged family and cruised to Europe frequently when she was a child. Her wardrobe came from ...

The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb

The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb (Atria Books, 2017)

Sharyn McCrumb is, quite simply, an American gem, and one of my favorite authors. From her books set in Appalachia with strange characters who remind us of our pioneer past, to St. Dale, a masterpiece about the legendary car racer, Dale Earnhardt in McCrumb's NASCAR series, McCrumb's poetic language and attention to ...
