JERSEY SHORE, NJ — It’s been nearly three months since Mary Lee has been tracked off the Jersey coast, but two younger great white sharks are now finding those waters appealing.

Finn was last “pinged” at 9:35 p.m. on September 7 about 10 miles off the Jersey shoreline between Long Branch and Asbury Park, while Amagansett has been tracked in waters farther south, about 30 miles off of Toms River, according to Ocearch’s Global Shark Tracker.

In August, Ocearch researchers tagged both juvenile female sharks off Montauk, N.Y. — Finn, measuring nearly 5 feet and weighing 79 pounds, and Amagansett at nearly 5½ feet and 92 pounds.

Finn began traveling south shortly after being tagged on August 12, settling off the coast along Monmouth County on September 1. After being tagged on August 20, Amagansett wasted no time heading south and was first pinged at least 60 miles off the North Jersey coast three days later, only to continue her southbound travels since then.

Meanwhile, Mary Lee — the 16-foot, 3,500-pound shark that became a social media sensation this spring with her travel adventures in the Atlantic Ocean off New Jersey — registered her last ping at 6:54 a.m. on June 17.

Since Mary Lee was tagged off Cape Cod, Mass., on September 17, 2012, she has traveled up and down the East Coast — from Nova Scotia to the Turks and Caicos Islands — for a total of some 40,000 miles.

Despite her tracking silence, Mary Lee remains a social media star with a 129,000-member Twitter following, while Finn has some 770 Twitter followers and Amagansett trails behind with 650.

All three great white sharks are among dozens of apex predators throughout the world that have been tagged by Ocearch researchers with global positioning satellite (GPS) devices in order to track their movements to better understand their behaviors.

Ocearch registers a ping when the shark’s dorsal fin breaks through the water, transmitting a signal that provides an estimated location. The group then displays a marker on a Google Earth map indicating where the ping was received.

Based in Park City, Utah, Ocearch is the leader in generating critical scientific data related to tracking (telemetry) and biological studies of keystone marine species, such as great white and tiger sharks.

You Meet the Most Amazing People on the Trail

The weather cooperated this weekend, so I went for more than one hike. After all, there are only just over fifty days before my walk to Maine commences, so why not.

This Saturday, some friends dragged me away from housecleaning (thank you!) for a quick jaunt through Watchung Reservation.  While we were there, we ran into two individuals from Westfield; the cosplayers introduced themselves ...

Go Take a Walk

Friday, March 30 was Take a Walk in the Park Day, so I did.  I really didn't have an excuse to not do so; the sun was shining, I had the day off, and I had no plans for the rest of the day.  So after a session with Abbe, my trainer at LifeTime Fitness, I made the short trip to Lake Surprise in Watchung Reservation.

As I made my way around the lake, it was easy to see how ...

After Bruce Patrson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. A the the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.

The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa (Washington Square Press, 2016)

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
