PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Plainfield Police Division responded to a report of a domestic dispute at midnight on August 29th at an apartment located at 312 East Seventh Street.

Upon arrival, Officers were met outside by a 19-year old female.  She indicated to the Officers that her boyfriend, Elmer Garcia, age 40, was in possession of a handgun and he pointed the gun at her and threatened to kill her.  She further indicated that Garcia barricaded himself in the apartment.  

Supervisors and officers immediately evacuated the apartment building and secured the surrounding area. Accordingly, the Union County SWAT Team was notified and swiftly responded.

SWAT Team Negotiators made several attempts to persuade Garcia to surrender.  He failed to respond to the negotiators requests.  Members of the SWAT Team subsequently made entry to the apartment.

Garcia was found hiding in the ceiling area within a closet in the bedroom. He was taken into custody around 3:20 a.m. without incident.  He was transported to Plainfield Police Headquarters. Various charges are be filed against Garcia.  

Plainfield Police Director Carl Riley said, "the Union County SWAT Team did a great job to bring this incident to a successful resolution without any harm to the suspect, law enforcement personnel and civilians."

UPDATE:  8/29/17, 2:05 p.m. - Elmer Garcia has been charged with the following crimes:  Aggravated Assault, Terroristic Threats, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose.
