PLAINFIELD, NJ - A grand opening with ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday evening to welcome the Grant BBQ restaurant to Plainfield.
Not knowing there was a lot available for parking, TAPinto Plainfield parked on the street and walked a city block to the restaurant. As we approached, the delicious smell of barbecue filled the air, and our stomach rumbled as the dinner hour was near. Once inside, one notices the restaurant is not huge, but it is inviting and fresh.
Carlos Sanchez, Plainfield's Deputy City Administrator for Economic Development, started off the evening's festivities, welcoming the crowd in Spanish. He then passed the microphone to Plainfield's Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, who had someone translating his speech for those in attendance.
"It's always a great day in Plainfield whenever we have the opportunity to do a grand opening," Mapp said.
The owners, originally from Ecuador, came to the United States in 1994; they have been married for 29 years, and have seven children and five grandchildren.
Mapp continued, with Spanish translation sprinkled in after each sentence, saying, "and like so many who came before them, they wanted to be a part of the American dream. And so, opening this restaurant is indeed an accomplishment. But more than that, it is a part of what we are looking to do here in the city to move our city forward. That is to bring economic development to all of the wards here in our city.
"So we have a number of restaurants in our city, and this will fit very well with what we are looking to do across our entire city. Right behind me is one of our newest developments, and we are looking forward, we are excited, that you have decided to invest in Plainfield and be a part of the renaissance. So do know that there are a lot of people in the city that are going to be rooting for you and who want you to be successful."
Grant BBQ restaurant's owner then spoke before the ribbon was cut:
After the speeches, glasses of champagne were raised to salute the owners and families, and to wish them success as they embark on this new adventure.
