Plainfield, NJ - The Plainfield Board of Education recognized the Plainfield Boys Varsity Baseball Team for winning the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (UCIAC) Sky Division Championship for the first time in team history at its May 16th meeting.

Head Coach Sean Radu was very proud of the team and said, "Before the season began our number one goal was, without a doubt, to finally bring a division title to Plainfield. We have had our bumps in the road along the way, but when we have a concentrated effort by all of our players we succeed.

Plainfield defeated the Hillside Comets 6-4 in 9 innings on Thursday, May 4, 2017, to bring the first division title to Plainfield. Senior Eddy Acosta threw 6 innings allowing 0 earned runs and striking out six batters while going 2 for 4 with the bat with 1 run batted in and scoring a run as well for the Cardinals.

Video:  Coach Radu distributes certificates to each member of the team

Junior Waldy Arias, who was just named the top junior infielder in New Jersey by a poll on NJ.com, got the division sealing win in extra innings throwing three scoreless innings while not allowing a hit, and striking out seven. He contributed with the bat going 1 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in adding three stolen bases.

Sophomore Abel Vasquez had two impact hits for Plainfield in the game going 2 for 4, batting in a run with a run scored before sophomore, Baldwin Gomez, who went 3 for 5 on the day, knocked in the game winning runs in the top of the 9th -plating two runs to give Plainfield a 6-4 lead. The hit marked his second game-winning hit of the season.

Placido Gomez, Brandan and Brendan Williams also added two hits a piece for the Cardinals, while Toran Smith had one of two extra base hits on the day.

Coach Sean Radu said, "I am proud of our team. Our players have been working hard towards this goal of a division title, they earned it."
