WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield’s town council officially approved the appointment of Westfield Police Captain Chris Battiloro to the role of acting police chief at its meeting Tuesday night.
David Wayman, who held the position of Westfield Police Chief since 2012, retired abruptly from the Westfield Police Department “after consultation with the Union County Prosecutor’s office and the town’s labor counsel,” Mayor Shelley Brindle had announced Aug. 1. Battiloro has been serving as acting chief since then.
“As with any personnel change of this magnitude, it’s critical that we complete a thorough search for a police chief who will lead by example and instill a culture of trust and accountability,” Brindle said on Aug. 1. “I am committed to a process that is worthy of the outstanding and dedicated members of our police department, as well as the residents they serve.”
Earlier in Tuesday night’s meeting, Brindle said she wanted to acknowledge and express her gratitude to Battiloro and the entire Westfield Police Department for hosting a very successful National Night Out last week.
