PLAINFIELD, NJ - The White Castle restaurant in Plainfield on South Ave. has closed.

“As a family-owned business that genuinely cares about our employees and the communities where we operate, we don’t like the idea of closing a Castle. That decision is always the last option for us. But we’re committed to being a strong company overall, and the tough part about that is sometimes needing to close a location that isn’t performing well," the company told TAPinto through a p.r. spokesperson.

"That’s what happened in Plainfield. We just weren’t able to sustain the Castle on South Avenue with the sales we were able to achieve there. It was a difficult decision because we’ve made a lot of friends in the neighborhood over the years. We have offered continued employment with White Castle to all of our team members,” the company added.

In June, the popular Giovanna's restaurant not far from White Castle shut its doors.  The former dining staple's location is included in a list of property addresses in the South Avenue East Redevelopment Plan that includes a 5,100-square foot Wawa food market that will include fueling stations.

Founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas, and known for its affordably priced small, square hamburgers, White Castle is often credited as the country's first fast-food chain. The burgers, sometimes referred to as "sliders" (and other nicknames by college students with late night cravings), were sold for a nickel until 1929, and the price stayed at ten cents until 1949. The price didn't reach a quarter until the 1980s, according to QSR magazine

White Castle received a jolt of publicity in 2004 with the release of the hit film, “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle”, and in recent decades has sold frozen, pre-assembled burgers in supermarkets and other retail outlets. However, the chain has faced challenges as food tastes have changed and people today tend to look for healthier options. In 2018, White Castle began to offer vegetarian "Impossible Burgers" to mimic the flavor and texture of beef burgers.

Today, White Castle is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and has over 370 locations in 13 states.
