Prayer can be expressed in silence, the spoken word, and through dance. On Sunday, November 1, during the 10 a.m. worship service, Susan Pope, liturgical dance teacher and author of Dancing My Prayers, will lead a group of dancers at Willow Grove Church as they present For Every Mountain and other musical selections. Following the worship service, children, teens, and adults from the community are invited to participate in a free two-hour class beginning at 11:30 a.m. This workshop will include many aspects of liturgical dance. Participants are invited to minister in liturgical dance at the following week's worship service on November 8.
Susan Pope holds a BA in dance from the University of Maryland and an MA in dance education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. She currently teaches dance for Newark Public Schools. In May of 2000, Susan was invited to the White House to speak at a conference titled Raising Responsible and Resourceful Youth about the impact of dance education in the lives of her students. Susan has served as the director of the St. James AME Church Dance Ministry in Newark, New Jersey for over 10 years and is a member of the National Liturgical Dance Ministry Network, and the National Dance Association. She believes God created her with the definite purpose of helping others through movement.
Funding for these events is provided by a grant from the Presbytery of Elizabeth. Fifty Presbyterian churches throughout north central New Jersey are involved in the presbytery, providing opportunities for spiritual growth, the performing arts, community partnerships, and social justice.
