It may not feel like spring, but that spring weather is right around the corner and so is allergy season! Here is some friendly advice from Rapps Pharmacy, your neighborhood pharmacy:
Combating the Allergy Season
As seasons change and pollen counts rise, more and more people clash with the aggravating symptoms of seasonal allergies. Beginning in February and lasting into early summer, spring allergies cause a slew of irritating symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, and itching. If you have these symptoms, it is important to learn what triggers your allergies and take steps to prevent your triggers from occurring. Speak to an allergist to find the source of your symptoms and find ways to avoid your triggers. You might find it helpful to:
- Keep windows and doors shut at home and in your car during the allergy season
- Take showers, wash your hair, and change your clothes after you’ve been outdoors
- Use weather reports to monitor pollen and mold counts and avoid outdoor activities when pollen counts are high
Your allergist may also recommend one or more medications to control your allergic symptoms. Rinsing your nasal passages with a neti pot and saline solution can provide a quick and inexpensive way to treat nasal congestion. Antihistamines (such as Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra) can help relieve sneezing, itching, runny nose, and watery eyes. Decongestants (such as Sudafed and Afrin) can provide temporary relief from nasal congestion. It is important to remember that nasal decongestants should only be used for a few days at a time as prolonged use can actually worsen symptoms and cause rebound congestion. Some combination products (such as Claritin-D, Allegra-D) provide relief as both an antihistamine and a decongestant.
If you have a history of seasonal allergies, your allergist may recommend starting some of these products two weeks prior to when your symptoms are expected to occur. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist to help find the best routine to combat the allergy season.
