In a world where so many turn inward, focusing on themselves, members of the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield reach out to others every day.
It may be a cliché to say the church and its members are doing God’s work, but indeed they are.
As the historic church celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, it is thriving in its outreach efforts.
Although the church has stood the test of time, it is certainly not frozen in time. The modern day efforts to grow and expand spark a bustling event calendar that includes religious and secular events.
A soup kitchen, staffed by volunteers and a professional chef (and newly renovated), is offered every Tuesday at noon to anyone who wants to attend. There are usually more than 100 in attendance each week. The soup kitchen is funded by the Tim Keyes Consort and by gifts from the local community as well as donations from local businesses.
Bagged lunches are handed out at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to everyone who arrives at the door of the magnificent church in the heart of Plainfield.
In addition, the church supports a variety of missions, including the StarFish food program in Plainfield, and regularly collects and distributes clothing and some housing items to families in need in the community. The Unitarian Church offers a monthly grocery distribution program for those in need as well.
The neo-gothic sanctuary houses a pipe organ comprised of 6.000 pipes. Many professional musical groups hold concerts in the church which is known for its acoustics. The tradition of excellence in music remains a valued part of the life of this community.
The beautiful church, which has an active children’s ministry, is also is in service to numerous other churches and organizations that use the worship space, the church hall, assembly rooms, and classrooms. The sanctuary and meeting rooms are available for rental.
