New Jersey smoke alarm installation events part of nationwide effort to install 100,000 free smoke alarms in 100 cities
PRINCETON, NJ - The American Red Cross is asking everyone to help Sound the Alarm and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.
The American Red Cross New Jersey Region will be holding Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events simultaneously in three New Jersey cities on Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8. Red Crossvolunteers, together with local fire departments and community partners, will be canvassing neighborhoods in Jersey City, Trenton and Camden, installing free smoke alarms and helping families create fire escape plans.
“In a typical year, home fires kill more people than all other natural disasters combined in the United States. We want to help protect families from home fires by installing free smoke alarms and providing important fire safety information,” said Ana Montero, CEO, American Red Cross New Jersey Region. “Please join us as we Sound the Alarm in New Jersey and help save lives. The Sound the Alarm events in New Jersey are part of a nationwide series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events to be held between September 23 and October 15, culminating in the Red Cross’ installation of the one-millionth free smoke alarm since its Home Fire Campaign launched in 2014.
The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Crosswants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
The Home Fire Campaign is making a difference. As of June 30, 2017, the Red Cross and partners across the country have helped save at least 260 lives and have installed 941,916 free smoke alarms. Eighteen of the lives saved and more than 21,000 free smoke alarm installations are credited to the work of the campaign by the Red Cross and partners in New Jersey.
