PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Rev. Dr. Joyce Scheyer has joined Grace Episcopal Church in Plainfield, New Jersey as Priest-in-Charge. In this position, Rev. Scheyer is responsible for spiritual leadership and development at Grace and for community outreach.
“We’re excited to welcome Mother Joyce to Grace Church and to work with her on a variety of projects and activities that will focus on our joint church life and our community activities,” said Jason Algeo, senior warden at Grace.
Prior to joining Grace, Rev. Scheyer was Priest-in-Charge at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in New Brunswick, NJ. She also has served as associate priest for Youth and Family Ministry at St. Luke’s in Scituate, Mass.; Hospice Chaplain at Hospice Community Care in Nebraska; and a Peace Corps Agriculture Volunteer in Sierra Leone. Rev. Scheyer has an AB degree with honors from Harvard; an MS from Oregon State University; a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska; and an M.Div. from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA.
“Lifelong formation is my delight. My goal at Grace is to offer inspirational preaching and a listening heart for pastoral care. I also bring experience in leading all ages in Christian formation,” said Rev. Scheyer. “I am looking forward to participating in the robust Music Ministry at Grace, led by Music Director Andrew Kilkenny. And I will work closely with Rev. Theodore Moore, Deacon, to learn from him about the experiences and practices at Grace.”
Rev. Scheyer is a member of the New Brunswick Bike Exchange, a newspaper columnist with ecumenical clergy association, the New Brunswick Clergy, and a Special Olympics swim team coach. She also will join the Board of Directors of Plainfield Community Outreach, the 501(c)3 organization managed by Grace Church to provide a variety of community services, including afterschool enrichment and a soup kitchen.
“I’m very much looking forward to my new life at Grace. Plainfield is new to me and I’m very eager to explore the everything. I’ll be looking to see where young adults gather, what the social and cultural activities are like and where there might be people seeking spiritual information and connections,” said Rev. Scheyer.
