The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to announce that the next mobile paper shredding program will take place at the Union County College Cranford Campus, 1033 Springfield Avenue. The event will take place on Saturday, June 1 in the back parking lot of the college, near the Planetarium.
On Wednesday, June 12, mobile paper shredding will take place at the Clark Public Works Yard, located at 315 Westfield Avenue in Clark.
“Union County’s mobile document-shredding service helps residents fight identity theft by providing a convenient way to shred confidential documents,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “The program also supports our other recycling programs and environmental initiatives.”
Both mobile paper shredding events will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., rain or shine. The events will end before 1:00 p.m. if the shredding truck reaches capacity.
All Union County residents are eligible to use the paper shredding service. In an effort to accommodate everyone, there is a limit of four 10-pound bags or boxes per person.
Residents are advised to bring their documents in paper bags, with binders and paper clips removed.
Damp, wet, and pre-shredded paper will not be accepted. Residents should continue to recycle non-confidential papers and magazines with their municipal recycling program.
Documents are put into 96-gallon containers provided by the shredding company. The items are then dumped onto a conveyor belt and shredded on site. Participants are welcome to view the shredding process via a closed-circuit television. The shredded documents are then shipped to paper mills and recycled.
The Freeholder Board also reminds residents to download the free Recycle Coach app for updates and information on all local recycling programs.
The mobile shredding program is paid for through New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Recycling Enhancement Act Grant Funds.
