There seems to be no end in sight for the current flu season which has touched every part of the country, and right here in New Jersey.  Rapps Pharmacy, an independent, full service, and locally owned Plainfield neighborhood pharmacy, offers these tips:

As influenza virus activity increases and is likely to continue circulating for upcoming weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to recommend influenza vaccinations for all persons 6 months of age and older. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about receiving the flu vaccination.

People who become sick with the flu will often recover in a few days to less than two weeks. However, some people (including young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions) are at a higher risk of serious flu-related complications. It is important to recognize the symptoms of the flu, as treatment with antivirals works best when begun within 48 hours of getting sick. Prompt treatment can mean the difference between having a milder illness versus a very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay. You may have some or all of the following symptoms when getting the flu:

  1. Fever
  2. Chills
  3. Muscle or Body Aches
  4. Cough and/or sore throat
  5. Runny/Stuffy Nose
  6. Fatigue
  7. Vomiting/Diarrhea

If you appear to have flu symptoms, you should stay at home and avoid contact with other people, except to get medical attention. When an infected individual coughs, they can spread viruses via respiratory droplets to people close to them and their surroundings. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap and cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues to prevent yourself from spreading the flu to others.

Sharyn McCrumb is, quite simply, an American gem, and one of my favorite authors.
