Grand Opening! Goodwill Flagship Store

Goodwill is opening its brand new flagship store and donation center in North Plainfield on Thursday, September 21!  The 12,000 square-foot store and donation center is the first built from the ground-up and features a convenient drive-up donation center.  This second Goodwill retail location in Somerset County will bring 36 jobs to the community and serve as a retail training enclave for individuals with disabilities from local rehabilitation agencies.

Goodwill stores offer local residents the opportunity to contribute to the mission of Goodwill by donating the belongings they no longer need. Donors will receive a tax receipt upon request. Goodwill’s mission is to empower individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to gain independence through the power of work.

Thanks to the support of our New Jersey customers and donors, Goodwill provided services for 592 local residents with disabilities and barriers to employment in 2016. We employ more than 300 community residents in our eleven stores and donation centers in the Garden State. Goodwill NYNJ, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has helped New York and New Jersey residents re-use and re-purpose possessions they no longer need since 1915. Last year, we helped NJ and NY communities divert 128 million pounds of textiles from landfills.

Facebook recently announced it will be changing its feed and algorithms so that news from publishers and posts from businesses will be relegated in favor of posts about your neighbor’s cat.

Maisie Dobbs by Jacquelline Winspear

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear (Soho Press, 2003)

In the song “The Schuyler Sisters” from the Broadway musical Hamilton, sister Angelica sings, “ I've been reading 'Common Sense' by Thomas Paine. So men say that I'm intense or I'm insane, You want a revolution? I wanna a revelation . . .” because she and her sisters are “looking for a mind ...

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume (Vintage Books, 2015)

I loved In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. Set in Elizabeth, NJ in the early 1950s, the landmarks, famous people of the era, name brand products, and cultural background are so familiar to those of us who grew up in Central Jersey that it's impossible not to relate to the novel on a personal level. The small city of ...

Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly

Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown, 2017)

Being a book reviewer has its pitfalls, the biggest of which is the “the false start.” This is when I get half way through a book and realize that I will have nothing concrete to say to my readers about it, and finishing the book would be a waste of my time. Since Beth's Books will be celebrating its third ...

When the last child cries for a crust of bread

When the last man dies for just words that he said,

When there's shelter over the poorest head,

We shall be free.

My husband, Tom, and I stood on the platform at the Menlo Park train station, wearing our black cowboy hats and jeans, waiting for the train to the ...
